Since the early days of Mario sprinting from left to right on the NES, running has been a staple in a video games. And yet, each new generation of consoles brings with it more detailed and beautiful environments. So why, then, do game developers still insist on designing game systems around running past all this beauty as quickly as possible? How did we get here? And, more importantly, should we slow down?

UPDATE: So the rumors were true: Microsoft bought Minecraft for $2.5 billion. However, the good news, at least for now, is that the Vita version appears to be safe.
Original: Reports and rumors have been flying this week that Microsoft is in talks to acquire Minecraft studio Mojang to the tune of $2.5 billion. The most concerning thing, though, is that it may impact the fate of the yet-to-be-released PlayStation Vita port of Minecraft, which many have looked to as the perfect portable version of the game.
Consider this your official reminder that McDonald's is currently offering a most excellent set of Happy Meal toys: Mario Kart has taken over the "golden arches" with a lineup of seven racers in karts and bikes (and a...plastic visor?). E3 2014 is less than three weeks away. That's...well, it's kind of crazy. I wanted to take a little time to ruminate on the upcoming conference, what with its megaton announcements, awkward executives giving speeches, and the inevitable week-before leaks. It's a special time of year for gamers to pull together and get really excited about their hobby. Here are a few things I'm looking forward to from each of the big players.
Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey has some pretty interesting thoughts on virtual reality in the video below (from Maximum PC magazine). That makes sense, since his product (now owned by Facebook), has quite literally been the jumping off point for a major movement toward VR. Head over to the full post to watch the video and read my reactions.
IGN is reporting that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is concerned about whether or not investors will vote to keep him in office this summer. While I really do appreciate a lot of what Iwata has brought to Nintendo, I hope this gives him a push to get the company to be more aggressive in a number of areas.
